🐺Wolves sighting on Monte Pisano: some precautions, an email and a Whatsapp number prepared for reports from the Tuscany Region
🐺In the last few days some wolves have been sighted in the territory of Monte Pisano and, more generally, the spread of this species of predators throughout the Tuscany Region is increasing.
🐺Two municipalities of Lungomonte have decided to make a joint communication – following the guidelines issued by the Tuscany Region – to spread some precautions and behavioral measures that could be useful and prove indispensable in case of sighting of this mammal.
1) NEVER APPROACH A WOLF
2) NEVER GIVE OR LEAVE FOOD TO A WOLF
3) A WOLF IS NOT A DOG BUT A WILD ANIMAL
👇
🆘 IF YOU SEE A WOLF:
Walk away quietly and stay alert.
Do not stop or approach to take photos or videos. Your gesticulation intrigues the wolf. Back off slowly. When wolves become aware of a presence, they can stop to observe curiously and then generally go away.
If you are in a car or even on horseback it is normal that they are not afraid. Don’t run away with your back to him.
⤵️ Make noise to remove it, renewing fear towards humans in these animals is positive.
IF A WOLF OR A DOG COMES CLOSE TO YOU?
Do not run away but slowly back away with the animal in front of you. Take a step towards the animal, scream, make as much noise as possible, clap your hands and slowly back away.
Renewing fear of humans in these animals is positive.
What if a wolf or a dog attacks you?
It is not possible to give valid indications for every imaginable situation. Here are just a few tips from
general character.
In the rare but not impossible case that a wolf or a dog attacks you, try to keep it away with sticks, stones, any tools available.
Find an easy position to defend: lean your back against a tree or a large one
rock, to prevent the subject or herd from getting behind you. Climb a tree or other elevated spot where the animal cannot reach you.
Don’t leave the safe place too quickly when you no longer see the wolf or the dog. He may be hiding nearby waiting for you to come down to attack you again. Instead, stay safe, settle down as best you can and immediately call for help on the phone and wait.
If you are more people, place yourself in a circle on your back and if there are minors, but especially children, put them in the center of the circle between you. The wolf prefers puppies in general and therefore children are more at risk.
HAVE YOU BEEN BITED BY A WILD ANIMAL?
Whatever species it was, call 112 (single emergency number) and go straight to the hospital. It’s a remote event if you haven’t provoked it, but it’s still possible. You may need a vaccination or antibiotic therapy to avoid possible risks.
What if you find a wounded wolf?
If you have a free dog, tie him up immediately and move him away.
Do not approach it, do not touch it, do not try to free it from laces, nets or anything else. Make a note of your location and call 112 immediately. Take a photo and send it together with the GPS position to the WhatsApp number of the Tuscany Region
366 681 7138.
IF YOU FIND A DEAD WOLF?
Don’t touch it and don’t let your dog approach it.
Take note of your GPS position, take a photo and send it together with the GPS position to the WhatsApp number of the Tuscany Region
366 6817138.
IF I WANT TO GO FOR AN EXCURSION?
Avoid doing this alone in wooded areas or very isolated rural areas that you are not familiar with. It is a good rule to be well informed about the route to take. Always carry a supply of water and space-saving food such as energy tablets or the like, a flashlight and something to shelter you from the cold, they could be useful if you have to spend the night out or in a makeshift shelter for any problem. Always carry with you a mobile phone with GPS activated and charged battery and if you can also a long-lasting power bank well charged and of good quality. When you are
in the woods you always have at least one sturdy stick in your hand with which to help you on your way, but which in case of need of defense you already have in hand without having to look around for it, wasting precious time.
If you take an excursion in an area where the presence of wolves is reported, never lose sight of your children and your dog. Keep the children and the dog in the immediate vicinity. Avoid walking the dog at night or at dusk. Do not let your dog free, experiences indicate that attacks are directed towards dogs, but the person can be attacked because they try to protect the dog. Never go free camping in isolated places in the countryside or in the woods.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE A WOLF? REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY.
